You're misunderstanding it if you're calling it a comedy. It's using absurdity, but calling it a comedy is a step further than their intention.

What they're going for is more of a "spectacle". A purposefully eccentric and absurdly presented romp, basically.

It's immediately obvious from how eccentric the show is being. If it wanted itself to be treated as a legitimately dark and scary show it wouldn't have sillier things like Masaki puking on the bus driver for a quick gag and would likely be much slower with its character introductions.

To give an example, think of Code Geass compared to a more standard real-mech anime such as Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans. Geass was functionally similar to a serious Gundam series but it was laced with this absurdity in its concept and writing, it was fucking stupid at times - and those things made it a spectacle.

Most of the episode was dedicated to showing how everyone was fucking insane in various ways while trying to string the atmosphere in a couple key scenes, but it wasn't trying to be ALL DARK ALL THE TIME.

The show is being advertised as a thriller and looking at the bits of speculah buried among the memes, I'd say it's being fairly successful at it so far.
