Paying attention to dialogue, item descriptions, characters and locations and doing a little critical thinking about it will give you a pretty good idea of the story. My first playthrough was blind, and I thought I had the plot figured out. Reading the wiki afterward only served to confirm my understanding. The lore is there, and those who paid attention can agree on most of it.

Because the lore and more importantly the way it's presented adds to the game and feels cohesive. The game would be good without anything beyond the intro and initial premise but that doesn't mean more indepth world building and lore isn't welcome.

And they are connected to the story of the chosen undead. It's not clear at the beginning of the game, but it all helps establish the setting and overarching plot (age of fire is ending). It all culminates in a very important event, linking the fire and extending this age, which is what the undead is called forth to do. He proves himself by ringing the bells, and then actually goes about linking the fire by collecting the souls of the lords who took their power from it, and then using them to refuel the flame (unless you choose the other ending, of course).

No one who's played the games will disagree on this.

I can tell you the story of Don Quixote in less than four sentences. Doesn't diminish the quality of the books (especially the second).

The vagueness of the story is exactly what made it so compelling. You don't really have any idea what's going on until the halfway point, and even then you're not told the whole truth. I actually didn't figure out what was truly meant by "linking the fire" until I actually did it in the end. But that's what kept me pushing onwards, despite getting frustrated and wanting to give up at some points. I wanted to see more, I wanted to understand the world and my character's place in it. If I knew most of that right off the bat, I probably wouldn't have cared nearly as much about completing the game.

I'm not that guy, and I agree with you that Dark Souls has an awesome story, but I wanted to give it a try. I think that's pretty good for a 4 line summary, which is what he claimed it could be boiled down to. Anything else I could add is just the details, except for probably Kaathe, Manus and the the whole humanity is darkness thing.
