That's because only 5-10% of people owned anything back then. You had the father, who owned everything, and the family of 10 who owned very little legally but could use the father's property as if they owned it.

If you look at households that owned slaves, you get a 25-50% ownership rate in the south depending on the state. This also doesn't include households that would be willing to own slaves if they had a use for them, households that would own slaves but couldn't afford it, and households that did not own slaves but actively defended slavery (reporting runaway slaves, voting in politicians to keep slavery legal, etc).

I'm not about to say we should be giving restitution and affirmative action benefits to blacks, but it's stupid to deny slavery's impact on the U.S. using faulty data.

The northern army destroyed the south during the civil war. We razed farms and cities, put them into starvation after the war. and then we left them on their own, the traitors. The beating we gave them was so bad, that they still haven't fully recovered economically.

Their working age men depleted, their farms razed, their cities destroyed, their economy ruined and no help from anywhere. Then In the years following the war, many went north to find work, growing industrial cities like detroit and chicago and causing further weakening of their already depleted workforce.

Their cities have no recovered, but their economy and their infrastructure still haven't.
